These are the benefits that are coming: Better photos, longer battery life, are some of the new features.

Google has released the first developer preview of the next version of its operating system, Android 15, which reveals some of its new features focused on user privacy and security, as well as features related to photography and device performance.

What are the new features that Android 15 will have?

The company explained on its website that it is focused on developing new technologies for Android 15 that improve user privacy and enable personalized advertising experiences for mobile applications.

This will be possible with the incorporation of the latest version of Privacy Sandbox, a proposal that aims to ensure the privacy of online users by eliminating third-party tracking cookies in Chrome with alternative APIs to continue distributing personalized advertising.

It also adds new APIs that take advantage of the fs-verity feature in the Linux kernel, which allows system files to be protected by custom cryptographic signatures, helping to ensure that they have not been tampered with or damaged.

Furthermore, the new version of Google's operating system integrates the Android 14 extensions into Health Connect, a centralized platform designed for managing data collected by health and fitness applications.

In this regard, the firm has commented that this update adds support for new information such as records related to the nutrition section.

The device's camera will also benefit from the latest version of Android, as it adds new extensions to have more control over the camera's hardware and algorithms, offering, for example, improvements in low-light photography by enhancing brightness in the preview or advanced adjustments to flash intensity.

Android 15 also advances compatibility for connecting to MIDI devices, which was introduced in Android 13. The new feature includes support for virtual MIDI applications via UMP.

Finally, the technology firm indicated that the operating system demonstrates the evolution of Android Dynamic Performance Framework (ADPF), a set of APIs that allow high-performance games and applications to interact directly with the thermal systems of the devices themselves.

In this way, compatible devices will include a new energy efficiency mode, which promotes energy savings in long-lasting background workloads, as well as the ability for the CPU and GPU to adjust their frequencies to improve the efficiency of smartphones.

What's new in Android 15 for foldable phones

Android 15 brings back a feature for foldable devices already seen in the first quarterly update (QPR1) of Android 14, which allows you to automatically transfer what you see on the inner screen to the main panel once the device is folded, simply by sliding your finger over it.

Google has unveiled the latest iteration of its operating system, which is now available through a developer preview and introduces a range of features focused on user privacy and security, with new additions to the Privacy Sandbox section.

In addition to these functions, the company is working on features focused on foldable devices, with the aim of improving the user experience when interacting with the different screens of the device, allowing the content seen on the inner screen to be transferred to the main panel once the terminal has been folded.

This was pointed out by analyst Mishaal Rahman, who noted that it was an option already included in the Android 14 QPR1 preview, released in September of last year, and that it was later introduced in subsequent versions of the operating system.

This alternative was part of the options menu included in the Settings section, where three buttons were displayed when 'continuing to use applications in the foldable folder': 'Always', so that the front screen turns on when the device is folded, 'Never', so that the front screen locks when the device is closed, and 'Only games, videos and more', so that the main screen turns on and displays applications that prevent the panel from becoming inactive.

This new mode, therefore, allows users to continue using the applications from the inner screen on the main screen as long as they place their finger on the latter and slide upwards once the device has been folded.
